Essay: Failure, Success, and Effort

Daily writing prompt
How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?

The overstated remark is that failure leads to success. We all need to hear it, I guess, and even that comes with its own mythos. Albert Einstein did poorly in math (he actually excelled). Walt Disney was canned due to lack of imagination (there was no reason given for his firing from the Kansas City Star ). Abraham Lincoln failed his way until presidency (he actually had many successes, including a Congressional run).

But the sentiment rings true: you have to fail to succeed. This is easy to digest, and so people glom onto it with ecstasy. We focus more on our failures than our successes. Yet, the truth is that both failure and success take something else. That something else is “effort.” Effort is what fuels drive. So, I believe we need to focus more on giving effort to our objectives. This is instead of stacking up our failures for a win.

Are you trying? Are you doing your best? Then you are good to go. Why accept failures to consider yourself a success. Lastly, understanding failure is helpful. If you are still giving effort to something then you haven’t failed. Failure is giving up. So, keep trying.
