The first day home–
after long hours
in the hospital–
I took your
elementary sis
to a Halloween party
while you stayed
cuddled up with mom.
I was stir crazy,
your sister needed
attention, too;
she won for best
costume even
though it was
quickly assembled.
Your aunt came to see you
while I was away,
but you slept
swaddled in cloth
cooing so sleepily.
When we got home,
I scooped you up,
and held you so close.
You comfortably snored.
Days later I would wake
in the middle of the night,
and see you staring at me
wide awake, and smiling,
a toothless, tired smirk.
You rolled over to me
across our bed,
and I held you so close again.
Much like I had done
on the first day of
your life.
