After my daughter was born,
I couldn’t stop thinking
about how much our nurse
did to make sure
everything was decent
and acceptable
when it came to
being locked
in a room for days.
Even the birth itself.
I saw the doctor
for a second.
No hello.
Job’s done.
And he was gone.
But the nurse was there.
Double their salary.
Triple it even.
They don’t have to have empathy,
but all of mine
(even during major surgery)
had it in spades.
I admire that profession,
because I could never do it.
There’s too much on their plate,
and too much accountability
to be had.
