Poetry: Two Funerals for the Death of Yourself

Good-day to you older man.
We join at the death of yourself.
Your younger self.
What things have we come to grieve today?

  • Your energy
  • Your vibrance
  • Your enthusiasm
  • Your carefree attitude
  • Your glow

And while sad,
what else shall we mourn together?
Just the good?
Nay. We shall mourn it all.

  • The horrid thoughts
  • The peace broken by unrest
  • The petulant fire
  • The immaturity
  • The chaos
  • The hate
  • The vileness
  • The venom
  • The depression
  • The indignation
  • The self-righteousness
  • The foolishness
  • The stupidity
  • The seething rage
  • The seething rage
  • The damnable seething rage

At nothing.

So we put your younger self to rest,
and look ahead at your older self.
While we are mourning (aren’t we?),
you have to think hard on this one:

Are you truly better?
Are you who you say you are?
Can you be?

There can only be two funerals.
One for who you were,
And one for who you are.

The mourners are coming now.
Are you truly better?
