The braying and whining
of dogs haunts my dreams.
I can taste cat litter
from ages past.
Yet, three cats and a dog
roam our home.
I do not love them very much
until a affinity crosses my heart.
The cats come lay with us
on the bed, swimming warmly.
They cross the blankets to a person,
turning into thick, burbling burritos.
They are my wife’s cats, and
she loves them dearly.
Meanwhile.
The dog is a terrier and can be
both mind-numbingly annoying
and weirdly sweet when he is calm.
He also loves to play all the time.
He is my daughter’s b-day dog,
and she loves him dearly.
My favorite animals, in this case,
are the ones I don’t own.
So they are the ones I only visit
out of temporary respect.
